Top 10 Tips for a Great High School Senior Photo Session
Your senior year is a big milestone, and your senior portraits should feel like you. Whether you’re most comfortable dressed up, in jeans and sneakers, on the beach, outdoors in nature, or in the studio, we’ll create a session that reflects your personality and gives you images you’ll love long after graduation.
A little preparation can make a huge difference. Here are my top ten tips for getting the most out of your high school senior photo session.
1. Choose Outfits That Feel Like You
Your senior session isn’t the time to dress like someone else. Choose clothing that fits your personality and makes you feel comfortable and confident.
I recommend bringing a couple of different looks when your session allows for outfit changes. Consider one slightly dressier outfit and one more casual option that feels like your everyday style.
Most importantly, make sure everything fits well and that you can comfortably sit, stand, walk and move in it.
2. Keep Colors and Patterns Simple
Solid colors and subtle patterns tend to photograph beautifully and keep the attention on you.
Neutral and earthy colors are always a great choice, but don't be afraid to incorporate color if it fits your personality. Try to avoid extremely busy patterns, large logos, neon colors or anything that may distract from your face.
When in doubt, bring a few options. I’m always happy to help you decide what will photograph best.
3. Think About Your Location
Your location helps set the entire mood of your senior portraits.
We have so many beautiful options around Bonsall, Fallbrook and North County San Diego, from open fields and trails to rustic areas, beaches and more natural landscapes. Studio sessions are also available if you prefer a clean, modern look.
Think about what feels most like you. If you spend every free minute at the beach, let's go to the beach. If you love the outdoors, let's find a beautiful natural location. Your senior photos should tell a little bit of your story.
4. Bring Something Personal
This is one of my favorite ways to make senior portraits unique.
Consider bringing something that represents an important part of your high school years or your personality. This could be a musical instrument, sports equipment, letterman jacket, dance shoes, books, artwork or something related to a hobby.
You can even incorporate your car, truck, motorcycle or another meaningful item into your session.
You don't need props, but a few personal touches can make your portraits feel much more meaningful.
5. Don't Forget Your Cap and Gown
If you already have your graduation cap and gown, bring them!
We'll create a few classic graduation portraits along with the more relaxed images from your senior session.
If you don't have your cap and gown yet, don't worry. I have cap and gown options available in the studio that we may be able to use for your session.
6. Take Care of Yourself Before Your Session
A little self-care before your senior session can help you look and feel your best in front of the camera.
Start with a good night's sleep the night before and drink plenty of water. Being well rested can make a noticeable difference in your eyes, skin and overall energy.
For girls, plan your hair, nails and makeup ahead of time. Your nails don't need to be professionally done, but clean, neat nails or a simple neutral polish photograph beautifully. Wear your hair and makeup in a way that still feels like you. If you're planning a haircut, color, facial, spray tan or other beauty treatment, try not to experiment with something completely new right before your session.
For boys, take a few minutes to think about grooming as well. Get a haircut several days beforehand if needed, and plan for a clean shave or neatly groomed facial hair on the day of your session.
For everyone, don't forget the little things: moisturize dry lips, check your eyebrows, remove chipped nail polish and take hair ties off your wrists before we begin.
The goal isn't perfection. It's simply to arrive feeling rested, comfortable and confident so you can enjoy your session.
7. Give Yourself Plenty of Time
Try not to schedule your senior session on an already packed day.
Give yourself enough time to get ready without rushing and plan to arrive a few minutes early. If we're photographing outdoors near sunset, timing matters because we can't ask the sun to hang around while we're looking for a missing shoe.
Starting relaxed makes the entire session more enjoyable.
8. Don't Worry About Knowing How to Pose
You do not need to practice poses before your senior session.
I'll guide you throughout the entire shoot, from where to put your hands to how to stand, sit, walk and look toward the camera. We'll also incorporate movement so your portraits don't feel stiff or overly posed.
Your only job is to show up and be yourself. I'll take care of the rest.
9. Bring a Parent, Friend or Someone Who Makes You Comfortable
You're welcome to bring someone along to your senior session.
Having Mom, Dad or a friend nearby can make the experience more relaxed and fun. They can also help carry outfits, check hair and make you laugh when we need a genuine smile.
Parents, I also recommend jumping into at least one photograph with your senior. Even if you weren't planning on being photographed, this is a milestone worth documenting.
10. Make the Session Your Own
Senior portraits should be about more than getting a good yearbook photo.
This is the end of one chapter and the beginning of another. Your session is an opportunity to capture who you are right now: your personality, interests, style and everything you've accomplished during your high school years.
Don't worry about recreating someone else's senior photos. We'll plan a session that feels natural and personal to you.
