The location that photographs best isn’t necessarily the location that’s the most impressive in person.


I’ve photographed stunning family portraits in places that look completely ordinary until the light hits just right. Meanwhile, some of the most popular parks can actually be some of my least favorite places to photograph because they’re crowded, harshly lit, or simply too busy in the background.

Light Beats Scenery Every Time


If I had to choose between:


  • An average location with incredible light
  • A breathtaking location with terrible lighting


I’m choosing the average location every single time.


Soft evening light creates beautiful skin tones, flattering shadows, and that dreamy glow people love. Midday sun? Not so much.


That’s why you’ll often hear photographers talking about “golden hour.” It’s not because we’re trying to sound fancy.


It’s because the sun is finally working with us instead of against us.

One of My Favorite Places? The Bonsall Preserve.


If you’ve never visited the Bonsall Preserve, it’s one of the true gems of North County.


The trails, rolling hills, mature trees, and natural scenery provide a beautiful backdrop throughout much of the year. Depending on the season, it can feel warm and golden, lush and green, or softly rustic.


It’s also a wonderful choice for families with children who love to explore.


Kids don’t always want to stand still and smile.


They want to run.


They want to laugh.


They want to pick up sticks, throw rocks into the creek, and discover bugs.


Honestly… those usually become my favorite photographs anyway.

I Don’t Believe in One “Best” Location


People often ask me,


“What’s your favorite place to photograph?”


Honestly?


It depends.


A maternity session deserves a different setting than a high school senior.


A newborn family with toddlers needs something completely different than an adventurous couple celebrating an engagement.


Even the same location can look entirely different from one month to the next.


That’s why I rotate through about ten favorite locations throughout the year, depending on the season, lighting, weather, and the vision we create together.
