If I had a dollar for every time an expecting parent asked me this question…
“What if my baby won’t sleep?”
…I could probably keep the studio stocked with coffee forever.
It’s easily one of the biggest worries parents have before their newborn session.
And I completely understand why.
You’ve probably seen countless sleepy newborn portraits online, with babies peacefully curled up in cozy blankets, looking like they’ve never made a sound in their lives.
Then reality arrives.
Your baby seems to have decided that sleeping is optional.
Here’s the good news:
Your baby doesn’t have to sleep for us to create beautiful photographs.
Every Baby Is Different
One of the things I love most about newborn photography is that no two babies are alike.
Some drift off to sleep before Mom even finishes feeding them.
Others spend the first hour wide awake, studying every light and shadow in the room as if they’re already trying to figure out how the world works.
Neither baby is easier.
Neither baby is better.
They’re simply different.
Your baby’s personality begins showing up much earlier than most people realize.
Awake Babies Are Beautiful Too
There seems to be an unspoken belief that sleepy babies make the “best” newborn portraits.
I don’t believe that’s true.
Sleepy portraits are beautiful.
But awake portraits?
They’re unforgettable.
Wide curious eyes.
Tiny expressions.
A little furrowed forehead.
That unmistakable look that says,
“Who are all these people?”
Some of my favorite images over the years have been of babies who never closed their eyes once.
Parents often end up loving those photographs because they remember exactly how their baby looked during those first few weeks.
We Never Rush the Process
One of the biggest advantages of a professional newborn session is that we’ve built time into the experience.
There isn’t a countdown clock.
We aren’t trying to squeeze everything into thirty minutes.
If your baby needs to eat…
We feed.
If they need to be rocked…
We rock.
If they need a diaper change…
No problem.
Sometimes all a baby needs is ten quiet minutes in Mom’s arms.
Those moments aren’t interruptions.
They’re part of the story.

Feeding Breaks Are Completely Normal

Please don’t.
Newborns eat frequently.
Sometimes they cluster feed.
Sometimes they simply want comfort.
A feeding break isn’t something that delays the session.
It’s something I expect.
In fact, those quiet moments often create some of the sweetest family photographs of the day.
Sometimes the Best Photos Happen Between the “Planned” Ones
One thing I’ve learned after photographing so many newborns is that babies don’t care about my shot list.
Some of the photographs parents treasure most aren’t posed at all.
They’re the tiny yawn after a feeding.
The stretch that makes everyone laugh.
Dad instinctively swaying while holding his baby.
Mom brushing a little curl away from tiny eyes.
Those aren’t moments you can plan.
They’re moments you simply notice.
Your Baby Doesn’t Know They’re Supposed to Sleep
Think about it.
Your baby has only been in the world for a few days.
Everything is new.
New sounds.
New smells.
New faces.
New lights.
Sometimes they’re simply curious.
And honestly…
That’s pretty wonderful too.
Those bright little eyes tell part of your baby’s story.
Wrapped Babies Often Settle More Easily
Many newborns feel comforted when they’re gently wrapped.
It reminds them of the snug feeling they experienced before birth.
That doesn’t mean every baby loves being wrapped.
Some do.
Some don’t.
Your baby’s comfort always determines the direction of the session.
If they’re happier with their arms free, that’s perfectly okay too.
Parents Sometimes Worry More Than Babies
This might surprise you…
Usually the most nervous person in the room isn’t the baby.
It’s Mom.
Or Dad.
Parents often arrive apologizing before the session has even started.
“He’s been fussy all morning.”
“She hasn’t slept since 4:00.”
“I don’t think today is going to go well.”
And then…
An hour later…
They’re laughing because everything worked out beautifully.
Babies are wonderfully unpredictable.
That’s part of the magic.
Some of My Favorite Portraits Have Been of Wide-Awake Babies
I remember one little girl who spent almost her entire session staring straight at me.
She wasn’t upset.
She simply wanted to know what was happening.
The result?
Some of the most expressive newborn portraits I’ve ever created.
Her parents later told me,
“That’s exactly how she still looks at us.”
Those photographs became part of her personality.
Years later, they’ll remember that curious little face.
Trust Your Baby
One of the most important things I can tell new parents is this:
Your baby already knows how to be a baby.
We don’t need them to perform.
We don’t need them to cooperate.
We simply meet them where they are.
Whether they spend the session sleeping, stretching, yawning, crying, or quietly watching the room…
That’s their story.
And it’s a beautiful one.
