What to Wear for Newborn Photos

Welcoming a new baby is one of the most meaningful moments in a family’s life, and newborn portraits are designed to preserve those first quiet days forever. One of the most common questions parents ask before their session is simple: What should we wear for newborn photos?

The good news is that newborn sessions are designed to be calm and effortless for parents. Most of the styling is focused on your baby, and many photographers provide wraps, blankets, and accessories so you don’t need to bring much at all.

Here are a few helpful tips to make sure your newborn photos look timeless and beautiful.

Newborn sessions are photographed in my private studio in Bonsall, California, serving families from Fallbrook, Vista, Oceanside, and throughout North County San Diego. These early portraits capture the tiny details and quiet moments that pass so quickly in the first weeks of life.

Keep Colors Soft and Neutral

Soft neutral tones photograph best in newborn portraits. Colors like cream, beige, soft gray, muted sage, and warm earth tones allow the focus to remain on your baby rather than the clothing.

Avoid bold colors, busy patterns, or clothing with logos or graphics. Simple textures and soft fabrics photograph beautifully and create a calm, timeless look.

Dress for Comfort and Simplicity

Newborn sessions are relaxed and often last a few hours to allow time for feeding, soothing, and settling your baby. Choose clothing that is comfortable and easy to move in.

For mothers, flowing dresses, knit sweaters, or soft neutral tops photograph beautifully. For fathers, a simple neutral shirt or lightweight sweater works well.

The goal is to create a soft, cohesive look that feels natural and timeless.

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Instead of everyone wearing identical outfits, aim for a coordinated color palette. For example, if mom wears a soft cream dress, dad might wear a light tan or gray shirt.

Siblings can wear neutral outfits that complement the palette. This creates a cohesive look without feeling overly styled.

What Should Siblings Wear?

Siblings photograph best in simple neutral outfits that coordinate with the overall color palette. Soft creams, beige, light gray, or muted pastels work beautifully and keep the focus on connection rather than clothing.

Avoid graphics or bright patterns so the attention stays on your baby and family.

What Should Baby Wear?

For posed newborn sessions, babies are often photographed wrapped in soft fabrics or styled with simple outfits and textures. Many studios provide a curated collection of wraps, blankets, and delicate accessories designed specifically for newborn photography.

These pieces are chosen because they photograph beautifully and safely.

Keep the Focus on Your Baby

Newborn portraits are about connection and simplicity. Soft colors, comfortable clothing, and minimal styling allow the attention to remain where it belongs — on your baby and your family’s connection.

Planning Your Newborn Session

Newborn sessions are typically photographed during the first two weeks after birth when babies are still very sleepy and naturally curl into those classic newborn poses.
