My Baby Has Baby Acne… Should We Reschedule Our Newborn Photos?

It usually starts with a text message a day or two before the session.

“Sarah… I don’t know what happened.”

“Yesterday her skin was perfect.”

“Now she has baby acne all over her cheeks.”

Or…

“He’s peeling everywhere.”

“She scratched her face.”

“His eye keeps watering.”

If you’ve found yourself staring at your beautiful baby while wondering whether you should postpone your session…

I have some very good news.

Almost everything you’re worried about is completely normal.

And in almost every case…

You do not need to reschedule.

& After

Newborn Skin Changes Are Completely Normal

Babies go through an incredible amount of change during their first few weeks of life.

Their skin is adjusting to the outside world.

Because of that, it’s very common to see:

Baby acne

Dry skin

Peeling feet and hands

Tiny scratches

Milk bumps

Flaky scalp

Redness

Little blemishes

These things aren’t unusual.

They’re part of being brand new.

From Behind the Camera

One thing I’ve noticed over the years is that parents almost always apologize for things that babies naturally do.

They apologize for peeling skin.

For scratches.

For baby acne.

For little flaky toes.

Then they see their finished photographs.

And suddenly…

None of those things are what they notice.

They notice tiny fingers.

Sleepy stretches.

Curious little eyes.

The way their baby fit perfectly in their arms.

That’s what I see, too.

Every Baby Is Beautiful—Exactly as They Are

One of the questions I hear before almost every newborn session is:

“My baby has baby acne… should we wait?”

Or maybe it’s dry skin, flaky feet, jaundice, tiny scratches from little fingernails, or even bruising from birth.

My answer is almost always the same.

Please don’t wait.

These early days pass so quickly, and most of those little newborn changes are temporary.

One of the benefits of professional newborn photography is that every image you purchase is carefully hand-retouched. During your ordering appointment, we’ll look through your portraits together and decide exactly how you’d like your baby remembered.

Some parents love every tiny newborn detail and want to keep the flaky skin that reminds them just how new their baby was.

Others prefer to remove temporary things like baby acne, jaundice, scratches, peeling skin, or birth bruising.

There isn’t a right or wrong choice.

These are your memories, and your finished portraits should reflect how you want to remember this incredible season.

My goal is never to make your baby look different.

It’s simply to create timeless portraits that feel beautiful, natural, and uniquely yours.

Don’t Wait for Perfect Skin

This is one of the biggest mistakes I see.

Parents think,

“We’ll wait until the acne clears up.”

Then…

A week passes.

Then another.

Suddenly the newborn stage is gone.

Your baby’s skin will change. The newborn stage isn’t

Their little newborn expressions will too.

The tiny curled-up stretches.

The sleepy yawns.

The way they fit on your chest.

Those moments disappear much faster than baby acne ever will.

Babies Are Wonderfully Imperfect

One of my favorite things about newborns is that every single one is unique.

Some have a full head of hair.

Some hardly have any.

Some arrive with tiny wrinkles.

Some have long eyelashes.

Some spend the whole session stretching.

Some sleep the entire morning.

Those little differences aren’t flaws.

They’re part of your baby’s story.

When Should You Reschedule?

There are a few situations where postponing may make sense.

If your baby is sick.

Has a fever.

Or your pediatrician recommends staying home.

Your baby’s health always comes first.

But temporary newborn skin changes alone are rarely a reason to cancel.

If you’re ever unsure, just reach out.

I’m always happy to talk through it with you.

The Details You’ll Miss Someday

Years from now…

You probably won’t remember whether your baby had a tiny scratch on their forehead.

You’ll remember the way they curled their little fingers around yours.

The tiny eyelashes.

The sleepy sighs.

The overwhelming feeling of holding someone so small.

That’s why these photographs matter.

They’re preserving a season.

Not chasing perfection.

Why Printed Photographs Matter

Imagine your child pulling an heirloom album off the shelf twenty years from now.

They’re not going to say,

“Mom… did I have baby acne?”

They’re going to laugh at how tiny they were.

They’re going to smile at the way you looked at them.

They’re going to discover their own beginning.

That’s why I believe photographs belong where families can hold them—not buried on a phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I wait until my baby’s skin clears up?

Usually, no. Most newborn skin changes—including baby acne, peeling skin, jaundice, tiny scratches, and birth bruising—are temporary. Every purchased portrait is professionally hand-retouched, and during your ordering appointment we’ll decide together which temporary details you’d like to keep and which you’d prefer to remove. My goal is to preserve your baby’s story while creating timeless portraits you’ll love for years to come.

Can scratches be retouched?

Yes. Temporary scratches and minor blemishes fully removed while keeping your baby looking natural.

Is peeling skin normal?

Absolutely. Many newborns experience dry or peeling skin during their first few weeks.

What if my baby has cradle cap?

That’s common too. Every situation is a little different, but mild cradle cap is rarely a reason to postpone.

When should we actually reschedule?

If your baby is unwell or your pediatrician recommends postponing, your baby’s health always comes first.

A Sarah Moment

"One of my favorite parts of every ordering appointment is hearing parents disagree—in the sweetest way possible.

Mom might say, “Let’s take out the peeling skin.”

Dad smiles and says, “No… that’s exactly how she looked.”

Neither answer is wrong.

That’s why I don’t make those decisions for you.

These portraits are about preserving your memories, not mine."

Ready to Preserve These Tiny Details?

Right now, it might feel like you’re noticing every little scratch, every flaky patch of skin, and every tiny imperfection.

One day, those won’t be the things you remember.

You’ll remember how impossibly small your baby was.

How they curled into your arms.

How they looked at you.

Those are the memories I’d love to preserve for you.
