When Should You Book Your Newborn Photographer?
One of the questions I hear most often is,
“When should we actually book our newborn photographer?”
It’s a great question because, unlike family portraits or senior pictures, newborn photography revolves around a date that nobody can accurately predict.
Babies have their own schedule.
Some arrive three weeks early.
Some decide they’re perfectly comfortable and stay put for another week.
The good news is that you don’t need to know your baby’s birthday to reserve your newborn session.
In fact, the best time to book your newborn photographer is during your second trimester or early in your third trimester, ideally between 20 and 30 weeks of pregnancy.
That gives you the best chance of reserving space around your due date while allowing plenty of time to plan your session.

Why Booking Early Matters
Unlike many types of photography, newborn photographers don’t book a specific calendar date months in advance.
Instead, we reserve your due date.
Think of it like making a flexible reservation.
Once your baby arrives, we’ll choose the perfect session date based on how everyone is doing.
This system allows flexibility while ensuring I don’t schedule too many newborns within the same week.
Because of that, I only accept a limited number of newborns each month.
Booking early helps guarantee you’ll have space reserved.
What Happens After I Book?
This is probably the second most common question I receive.
After you’ve reserved your session, there’s actually very little you need to worry about.
As your due date approaches, we’ll stay in touch.
Once your baby arrives, simply send me a quick text or email.
We’ll choose a session date that works best for your family, usually within the first two weeks after birth.
No stress.
No guessing.
No trying to schedule everything before you’ve even met your baby.
What If My Baby Arrives Early?
It happens more often than people think.
Sometimes babies decide to surprise everyone.
Don’t panic.
Because your session is booked around your due date—not a fixed calendar date—we simply adjust.
Your baby’s health always comes first.
Whether your little one spends extra time in the hospital or simply arrives ahead of schedule, we’ll work together to find the best time.
What If My Baby Is Late?
This question makes me smile because so many parents worry they’ve somehow ruined their newborn photos.
You haven’t.
Babies are wonderfully unpredictable.
If your little one decides to arrive a week late, we simply shift the session accordingly.
One of the biggest advantages of booking during pregnancy is that we’ve already planned for these possibilities.
Is There Really a “Best” Age for Newborn Photos?
Yes…and no.
The classic sleepy, curled-up newborn portraits are usually easiest during the first 3 to 14 days after birth.
During those first days, babies naturally sleep deeply and still enjoy being gently curled into the cozy positions they loved before they were born.
That doesn’t mean you’ve missed your opportunity if your baby is older.
Not even close.
I’ve photographed babies well beyond the two-week mark and created beautiful images that families treasure just as much.

Should I Wait Until My Baby Is Born Before Booking?
I wouldn’t recommend it.
Many photographers—including myself—limit the number of newborn sessions we accept each month.
Waiting until after delivery can make it much harder to find availability.
Booking ahead gives you peace of mind.
Instead of searching for a photographer while you’re adjusting to life with a newborn, everything is already planned.
What If I Haven’t Chosen a Name Yet?
You’re not alone.
Lots of parents book before they’ve settled on a name.
Some haven’t even decided whether they’re having a boy or girl.
That’s completely normal.
When you reserve your session, all I need is your estimated due date.
Everything else can wait until your little one arrives.
What Happens During the Session?
Many parents are surprised to learn that newborn sessions move at baby’s pace.
There are no timers.
No rushing.
No pressure.
If your baby needs to eat, we feed.
If they need cuddles, we cuddle.
If they need extra time to settle, that’s perfectly okay.
Some babies sleep almost the entire session.
Others prefer to stay awake and show off those beautiful eyes.
Either way, we’ll create images you’ll treasure forever.
